Latin America and the Caribbean
Although the Latin America and the Caribbean region has been free from inter-state armed conflicts for the past two decades, violence, coups, human rights abuses, and the presence of illegal armed groups continue to pose significant challenges to peace and security across the region.
In addition, Latin America and the Caribbean are increasingly bearing the brunt of climate change and environmental degradation. Rising temperatures, sea levels, and extreme weather events, combined with illegal activities, are placing growing pressure on communities, livelihoods, and security.
In Central America, particularly the Central American Dry Corridor, severe climate vulnerability due to irregular rainfall, drought risk, and low agricultural productivity exacerbates tensions over natural resources and serves as a potential source of conflict.
Why our members’ work matters in Latin America and the Caribbean
In response, GPPAC members in the region are exploring how new technologies can support more effective and locally grounded peacebuilding. They are pioneering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and open-source intelligence (OSINT) to strengthen early warning and conflict prevention in ways that are inclusive, conflict-sensitive, and rooted in local realities.
A key part of this work is bringing people together. By convening civil society actors, researchers, and practitioners, members help build the relationships and systems needed to turn information into meaningful action and protection.
Through the Climate, Peace and Security (CLIMPSE) project, co-funded by the EU, they use their expertise on OSINT to track environmental change and potential conflict escalation. They do so together with local researchers who verify and validate incidents in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. These researchers are trusted by the communities they work with. They not only collect and analyse information but also help turn early warning into safer, more secure communities. Click here to find out more about CLIMPSE.
