Working with the UN

As a network of civil society organisations from all over the world, GPPAC seeks to strengthen the link between the work that its members undertake in diverse local, national and regional contexts and global policy processes related to conflict prevention and peacebuilding at the United Nations (UN).

GPPAC, on the one hand, brings local experiences and knowledge to the global level. We facilitated, for example, a capacity building and advocacy visit by a representative delegation of Malian Civil Society to New York in late 2016 to argue for a people-centred and inclusive approach to security processes in Mali.

On the other hand, GPPAC also takes global policy discussions and actions of the UN to the regional and national level and the work of its members. This is often done jointly with Regional Intergovernmental Organisations, national governments and civil society actors. GPPAC, together with its members, for example ensured the linkage of the UN framework for the Great Lakes to the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) civil society fora and enabled exchanges among all parties.

Based on these approaches our work at UN level currently focuses on what is known as the UN Peacebuilding Architecture (e.g. through the "Together for a Better Peace" website and the Prevention Platform – see below), the new "Sustaining Peace" resolution that will guide the work of the UN and its Secretary General on prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding the coming years, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through this work, GPPAC aims to increase access, political space and opportunities for civil society to engage with relevant global and regional stakeholders and provide input into relevant policy processes.

The Civil Society – UN Prevention Platform

The Civil Society – UN Prevention Platform was created in 2016 against the backdrop of a renewed focus at the UN on prevention and inclusivity, not least the three reviews of UN's peacebuilding architecture, peace operations and work on women, peace and security of 2015 and the 2016 resolutions on sustaining peace (UNSCR 2282).

To contribute to meaningful inclusion of and partnerships with local actors, the the Civil Society – UN Prevention Platform aims to improve the cooperation and coordination on prevention between UN actors across the system and civil society actors in New York and in the field.

Together for a Better Peace

The Together for a Better Peace project aims to spread knowledge about, support and contribute to the work of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC). We do this by monitoring the meetings and activities of the PBC and developments in the countries on its agenda and providing meeting summaries and updates on Betterpeace.org.

At the same time, we advocate for the PBC to increase transparency, effectiveness and inclusiveness of its processes and fully live up to its unique role in assisting countries in their peace efforts to prevent the lapse and relapse into conflict.
