The British Council
The British Council is an independent,
non-profit making body registered as a charity. Its aim is to promote international
understanding through educational, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation.
More recently the British Council has begun to include the right to access
information and takes part in knowledge development processes as a key element
in their work in the field of governance. In particular the Council has supported
work on the role of the media in assisting the democratisation process in
developing and transitional economies. The Council has sponsored training
programmes for journalists and for ministers and senior civil servants in
handling the press in over twenty countries. It has also provided scholarships
to overseas journalists to study in the UK.
